The World Cup is a monumental occasion for soccer fans, but it's also bringing a new wave of artworks popping up across Seattle.
Arts correspondent Brangien Davis has the story.
-Sports and art actually have a lot in common in that they are these things that people sort of feel and understand, almost on a more base level.
They have the ability to bring emotion out of people and they have the ability to connect people.
-Leo Flor is part of the local organizing committee preparing for the FIFA World Cup.
The nonprofit has been working to find ways Seattle can benefit from the games long after the last goal.
-We had to find ways to show people what's special about Seattle and figure out ways to make that last.
One of the most powerful ways that you can communicate across languages is art.
-The result is more than 25 public art installations, stretching from Seattle Center to Pioneer Square, most along a four mile walk called the Unity Loop.
You'll find murals from local artists, Stevie Shao and Leo Shallat, and a block full of framed outdoor paintings in the RailSpur alley.
-Every piece of art that we've commissioned, no matter where you look, if you look hard enough, you'll actually find a cedar branch detail.
And the cedar branch detail, on advice from some of our partners at the Puyallup Tribe, was a nice way to pay homage to the First Peoples of our region.
-The artworks will be up for several months after the games and in the case of Gerard Tsutakawa's new sculpture just outside Lumen Field, It's here to stay.
-Our goal is to use this moment of global attention that comes from soccer, and then convert that into lasting progress for our community, whether that's in art, small business, or just maybe even the way that we see ourselves as a community.
-Next time, how will the World Cup impact Seattle in the short and long term?
We'll explain.
